Kamień Z Kontrewersu

A mysterious archaeological relic

The stone was discovered in 1988 in Kontrewers near Mniów in the Świętokrzyskie voivodship. It is considered one of the most interesting Polish archaeological relics.

Two unidentified figures, male and female, are engraved on it. According to folk tradition and the very first scientific interpretations these figures were treated as figures of devils. The stone was also associated with the late medieval or early modern representations of Slavs pagan beliefs.

After being discovered for the first time, the stone was reburied and rested in the ground for more than ten years. Thereafter, a scientist from the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw, Gerard Gierliński, decided to return to this finding and reinterpreted the engravings. In his opinion these figures are similar to the representations of Kokopellia – a deity of fertility revered by North American Hopi Indians.

It turned out that the stone had been placed on a pedestal, exactly on the east-west axis, with the pictures engraved on its western side. There are various scientific conceptions relating to the mysterious relic. Hovewer, it is worth seeing due to its remarkableness.
