Street Lights to Commemorate History

As the legend says, around 1680, knights from the Sandomierz region founded several street lights as a thanksgiving for the victories over Turks on the battle of Chocim (Khotyn). The oldest one, and the best preserved, stands at an entrance gate to the former manor house, when the “Sarmata” Hotel is situated in Sandomierz now. However, a history about the happy knights is not fully confirmed.

According to some researchers, these street lights were rather guideboards helping in orientation for travellers on the main routes. Such an interpretation can be supported by a fact that these street lights are situated along main roads, in an open area, to be visible from all sides. In folk tales, the street lights are also associated with… lepers. It is supposed that people used to bring food for them and left it under the street lights. Bright light would alert travellers to the proximity of a leper colony.

We can come across another the Chocim (Khotyn) street light while riding a bicycle along the trail from Sandomierz to Dwikozy. It is located on a small hill next to a historic bastille in Kichary. The Chocim (Khotyn) street light in Mokoszyn stands along the Sandomierz – Dwikozy route in an orchard of the secondary school. The street light in Nowy Garbów is different from the others because of its coping. A figure at the top of this street light resembles a figure of Sorrowful Christ.
